Three different problems wearing one label
“Specialty tape” is our catch-all for the grades that exist because a normal tape would fail outright. They fall into three groups, and mixing them up is expensive.
HVAC and building services
Aluminium foil tape seals flexible duct, rigid duct joints and insulation facing. The relevant decisions are thickness and flame retardance: 30 µm and 40 µm handle standard duct work, while a project with a fire-rating requirement needs the 50 µm flame-retardant grade. Confirm the requirement with your inspector during design — retrofitting it after the ductwork is closed is not a serious option.
Electronics and high-temperature masking
Polyimide tape survives wave soldering, reflow and conformal coating at up to 250 °C continuous, without shrinking away from the mask line and without leaving silicone residue on the board. It is normally bought narrow — 12 mm to 25 mm — for connectors and specific components, which is why we slit to order rather than pushing a minimum width on you.
Electrical insulation and shielding
Glass cloth tape insulates transformer and motor windings in class F and H systems. Conductive copper foil tape handles EMI shielding and grounding, and the detail that matters there is that the adhesive itself must be conductive. Ordinary copper foil tape with a non-conductive adhesive will not give you continuity through the adhesive layer, whatever the datasheet’s resistance figure implies.
HVAC ductwork
Foil tape for flexible duct, rigid joints and insulation facing.
Electronics masking
Polyimide tape that survives wave solder and reflow without leaving residue.
Transformer insulation
Glass cloth and polyimide tapes for class F and H winding insulation.
EMI shielding
Conductive copper foil tape for grounding and shielding enclosures.
Temperature, honestly stated
Continuous ratings for our high-temperature range: aluminium foil 120 °C (150 °C for the flame-retardant grade), polyimide 250 °C continuous with short excursions to 300 °C, glass cloth 200 °C. Derate for continuous rather than intermittent exposure — a one-hour peak is not the same duty as a permanent one, and quoting the peak as if it were the working rating is how masking failures happen.

Frequently asked
What is the maximum working temperature?
Aluminium foil tape is rated to 120 °C continuous, or 150 °C for the flame-retardant grade. Polyimide tape is rated to 250 °C continuous and survives short excursions to 300 °C. Glass cloth tape holds 200 °C. Always derate for continuous rather than intermittent exposure.
Is aluminium foil tape suitable for HVAC ducts?
Yes. WR-SP-01 to WR-SP-04 are the standard HVAC grades for flexible duct, insulation facing and rigid duct joints. For projects with a fire-rating requirement, specify the flame-retardant WR-SP-03 and confirm the local code with your inspector.
Do you supply polyimide tape in custom widths?
Yes, from 3 mm upward. Polyimide is usually bought in narrow widths for connector and PCB masking, so we slit to order rather than forcing you to buy a full roll.
Can you supply conductive copper foil tape?
WR-SP-09 uses a conductive acrylic adhesive with a conductive backing, which is what EMI shielding and grounding applications need. Ordinary copper foil tape with a non-conductive adhesive will not give you continuity through the adhesive layer.
