What PVC electrical tape is actually for
Electrical tape is a mechanical product wearing an electrical badge. Its job is to hold a bundle together, resist abrasion where a loom rubs against a chassis, and keep moisture out of a joint — and to do all three without conducting, without burning, and without unravelling when the harness flexes. The dielectric figure matters, but it is rarely the reason a tape fails in the field. Unwind force, adhesion retention and flame retardance are.
We coat PVC film with a rubber-resin or acrylic adhesive on our own line, then slit and spool to order. That means the unwind tension your wrapping machine sees is a parameter we set, not something we inherit from a converter. If your line jams on every third roll, that is a conversation we can actually finish.
Choosing a thickness
Thickness, not colour, is the decision that matters most. Two rules cover the majority of cases:
- Up to 600 V, general wiring and automotive harness — 0.13 mm to 0.18 mm. These are the high-volume grades: flexible, easy to wrap by hand, and the cheapest per roll.
- Up to 1,000 V, distribution and panel work — 0.20 mm and 0.25 mm. The extra film carries the higher breakdown voltage and resists mechanical damage better, at the cost of flexibility and price.
If you are wrapping a demagnetising coil or a transformer, specify the higher-tack grades — the adhesive has to hold against sustained pull, not just survive a wrapping operation.
Certification, stated honestly
The North American electrical market expects a listing, and a listing belongs to a specific file, product range and plant. We produce grades built to UL 510 and CSA C22.2 No.197 requirements, and we confirm the currently listed scope in writing before you design one into a certified assembly. If your project does not require a listing, the general-purpose grades are materially cheaper and we will tell you plainly which is which rather than letting you assume.
Every grade is formulated with low lead and cadmium content and is supplied with RoHS and REACH declarations. A California Proposition 65 statement is issued per batch on request.
Automotive harness
Colour-coded wrapping of wiring looms where abrasion resistance and a clean unwind matter.
Building wiring
Insulating and bundling conductors in distribution and panel work up to 1,000 V.
Demagnetising coils
Protecting coil windings on motors and transformers where high-tack retention is needed.
Harness houses
High-volume manual and semi-automatic wrapping lines needing a consistent unwind force.
Specifying a colour
Nine colours plus the green/yellow earth stripe cover the standard wiring codes. Colour is a batch parameter, not an afterthought — order it with the thickness, because changing colour on a running line is a production event, not a stock pick. Non-standard earth stripe ratios are possible above 5,000 rolls.

Frequently asked
Is your electrical tape UL listed?
We can supply PVC electrical tape produced to UL 510 and CSA C22.2 No.197 requirements for North American buyers. Because a listing applies to a specific file, product range and factory, we confirm the current listed scope in writing before you specify it into a certified assembly. If you need an unlisted general-purpose grade, the price is materially lower and we will tell you plainly which is which.
What is the difference between 600 V and 1,000 V tape?
It is thickness, not chemistry. The 0.13–0.18 mm grades are rated for circuits up to 600 V; the 0.20 mm and 0.25 mm grades carry a 1,000 V service rating and a higher breakdown voltage. For harness wrapping on low-voltage automotive circuits, 0.13 mm is standard. For mains distribution work, specify 0.20 mm or above.
Is the tape RoHS and REACH compliant?
Ask us for the report rather than take our word for it. Our PVC electrical tape is formulated for low lead and cadmium content, and we supply the RoHS and REACH test report with its number so your own compliance team can check the measured values against the limits that apply in your market. If your market applies California Proposition 65, the Prop 65 statement is issued per batch on request.
Can you supply the earth (green/yellow) colour to spec?
Yes. Earth tape is available in the 0.13 mm and 0.15 mm grades in the standard 4:1 green/yellow stripe. Non-standard stripe ratios are possible on runs above 5,000 rolls.
How is breakdown voltage measured?
By dielectric breakdown test on a single layer at the specified thickness, following the method in the relevant standard. Test reports from SGS or Intertek state the method, sample thickness and result, so you can compare like with like against any other supplier.

How the range actually behaves
Construction, the relationship between thickness and breakdown voltage, the grades the factory nominates for each application, and where every certification claim on this page comes from.

Eighteen grades from 0.105 mm to 0.20 mm. Dielectric strength runs 25.00 to 42.86 kV/mm across the range, and the catalogue nominates a grade for each of four application groups rather than selling thickness alone.

Construction
A film that insulates, a coat that grips
Every grade in this family is a PVC film with a rubber-resin adhesive coat. The catalogue records both — a backing column and an adhesive column, identical across all eighteen rows — so there is no grade in this range that departs from this construction.
The film does the electrical work. The coat does the mechanical work: it grips through dust, holds a clean wrap and stretches enough to conform without lifting at the edges.
- Backing: PVC film across all eighteen grades
- Adhesive: rubber-resin across all eighteen grades
- Two surface finishes in the range: matte and gloss
- Six colours confirmed by the factory
Choosing a grade
Breakdown voltage does not follow thickness
The obvious assumption is that thicker tape breaks down at a proportionally higher voltage. The catalogue does not behave that way, and the reason matters if you are designing into a mains assembly.
The thinnest grade is among the strongest
At 0.105 mm, RHE01 reaches 42.86 kV/mm. The 0.19 mm RHE15 sits at 36.84. Thicker is not automatically safer — dielectric strength follows the formulation, so specify the grade and let the thickness follow.
One thickness, several very different grades
6 grades sit at 0.130 mm. Their breakdown voltage ranges from 3,250 V to 5,000 V — a 54% spread inside one thickness. This is why a buyer who specifies "0.130 mm electrical tape" has not specified anything yet.
Working voltage is a separate number
The label rates the tape for use at not more than 600 V. That is the working voltage. The 3250–8000 V in the catalogue is breakdown, a laboratory figure. They differ by an order of magnitude and the two are never interchanged on this page.
Applications
The catalogue nominates a grade for each of these
Vehicle hand wiring
The grades the catalogue nominates for vehicle hand wiring and general electrical work. Two of the three carry the low-lead formulation.
RHE01 RHE02 RHE03
General electrical work
The widest band of the range, from 0.13 mm economy up to the 0.18 mm grades the catalogue nominates for UL construction. Largest set here because it is where most buyers land.
RHE04 RHE05 RHE06 RHE07 RHE10 RHE11 RHE12 RHE13
Economy appliances
Lower-cost grades for appliances where the tape is inside a housing rather than inside a mains assembly. Note RHE05 sits at 3250 V — the lowest breakdown in the range, and worth knowing before you substitute it.
RHE08 RHE09 RHE14 RHE15
Demagnetising coils
The three heaviest grades: 0.19 to 0.20 mm, 7500 to 8000 V breakdown, elongation at 200 %. All three carry the low-lead formulation and are the grades the catalogue marks UL/CSA.
