Specifying Tape for Motorcycle Wiring Harness Bundles
A loom is not a single requirement. Four things decide whether a tape works on a motorcycle harness: width, roll length, unwind force and surface, and colour.
What a harness bundle actually needs
- Width — the bundle diameter sets how many wraps overlap. A tape narrower than the bundle leaves an edge that lifts; a much wider tape adds bulk and can chatter on the loom.
- Roll length — a long run of wraps consumes a lot of tape. Length per bundle is worth stating, because it decides the roll size you order.
- Unwind force and surface — the tape is applied under tension on a moving line. A grade that unwinds too stiffly can break a wire; one that unwinds too softly needs a re-wrap.
- Colour — usually the wire colour code. Confirm the colour list against the grade you are quoted.
Where the numbers come from
On the grades we ship with a legible label, the label states not more than 600 V as the working voltage and 80 °C. That figure belongs to the labelled grade. For a motorcycle loom the relevant question is usually mechanical — width, unwind, adhesion to the wire insulation — and those we confirm per order against the catalogue grade we quote.
Roll lengths we work with are 10Y and 20Y, where Y is yards: 10Y is 9.144 m and 20Y is 18.288 m. Those are unit conversions, not measured lengths, so confirm the length you need in the unit your line uses.
What we cannot claim
We do not claim that one grade fits every vehicle harness. We do not quote a temperature class for a grade that does not carry a label, and we do not present a catalogue entry as vehicle-OEM approved. If a customer requires a specific approval, send the requirement and we will tell you whether we hold evidence for it or not.
What to send us
- Bundle diameter and the width you want to land on.
- Length consumed per bundle, or bundles per roll.
- Whether the line runs hot, and the ambient range during assembly.
- Colour list.
- Destination and annual volume.
We confirm the closest catalogue grade, the packing and the documents that travel with the shipment, in writing, before anything is quoted.
